My daughter is 15 months old and this is her second Christmas. I decided that it would be fun to do some Chinese activity to learn some Christmas themes like a Christmas tree or snowman. She’s born into a family that is half white and half Chinese. I’m Chinese but not literate or fluent in the language. I can barely hold a conversation without using some English words. Since I want my daughter to learn Chinese I try really hard to talk to her all the time in Chinese. Even though now she repeats words in English, I emphasize the Chinese words. My husband who is Caucasian will repeat the words in Chinese too now that he knows and is learning along with my daughter. My last fun Chinese activity learning Christmas Tree puzzle was so much fun, I decided to create another puzzle to learn snowman. So below is how I created a 2 piece puzzle for a fun Chinese activity learning snowman. This activity is fun to make and cost me less than $5 to make.
Fun Chinese Activity Learning Snowman
I created a puzzle like the Melissa and Doug wooden puzzles that she loves. She was doing great with matching up the puzzle pieces on the board I decided to build off of that and create a snowman activity for her to learn and play too. This way she can learn shapes, and colors. A slight difference in my last activity with a Christmas Tree, I thought it would be fun to include some sensory item to let her feel the softness of the “snow”.
Fun 2 Piece Puzzle to Learn Snowman in Chinese
For this activity I had all the supplies already and cost less than $5 to make. It was quick and simple. My daughter is 15 months old and thought it would be cool to include some sensory item. So cottonballs and pipe cleaners were used as well.
Chinese Words
- Snowman (雪人, shuet yun)
What you need:
- 2 pieces of cardboard one thick and one thin
- Colored cardstock
- Scissors
- Glue
- Sharpie
- Exacto knife
- Cottonballs
- Pipe cleaner
Steps:
- Cut out a snowman and hat shape from the cardstock. I created a blue snowman and green hat. Trace the shapes onto cardboard 1
2. Cut out the snowman and hat shapes from cardboard 1 with an exacto knife.
3. Cut little tabs on the sides of your shape in cardboard 1. Also cut the shapes a little wider than it is. So it will be easier for the puzzle piece to be taken out or in of the board.
4. Glue the cardstock onto the cutout cardboard snowman and hat.
5. Glue the cottonballs, eyes, nose, also not pictured here, the pipe cleaners as arms.
6. Trace the shapes from cardboard 1 onto 2. Then glue cardstock to cover the shapes. Glue cardboard 1 onto 2. Write 雪人 on the cardboard 2.
Overall:
WELL, my daughter has never seen a snowman before. We’ve never made one in the snow yet and it’s probably something we need to do if we ever get enough snow. So she had fun playing feeling the cottonballs, ripping off the eyes, and ripping off the cotton. She kept on saying it was an owl. We kept on playing with it, I would call it a shuet yun and she would call it an owl. Actually every time she saw it she would say it’s an owl. It was funny. We had a blast. Maybe it does look like an owl, I don’t know. Now I know that we need to expose her to more snow related stuff like maybe snowflakes, snowman, snowballs, snow forts. Hopefully we will get to play more in the snow and she will learn more about this. I loved making this and playing with her.
