Fun Chinese Activity Learning Christmas Tree

Fun Chinese Activity Learning Christmas Tree

This is my daughter’s second Christmas and I wanted to think of more Christmas themed activities to do.  Her first Christmas there were no activities since she was only 4 months old.  Now that she’s 15 months old, I thought we could do something that is Christmasy and learn some Chinese along the way.  I was inspired by Chalk Academy Christmas tree activity and I modified a little to create a Christmas Tree puzzle.  This is a fun Chinese activity learning Christmas tree for toddlers 0-18 months old.  I’m the only parent in the house that knows that Chinese so I try at all times to speak Chinese to her.  I do speak a lot of Chinglish because I’m not fluent or literate in Chinese.  My parents help a lot and explain to me Chinese songs etc.  It’s a fun learning time for me and my 15 month old daughter.

I found that my 15 month old daughter loved playing with the wooden puzzles and was improving on them.  She is able to match up the animals on the kid wooden puzzles so I based my activity on that puzzle.  Focusing on two parts of the Christmas tree – the star and the tree.

Chinese Words:

  • Star ( 星, xing)
  • Christmas Tree (聖誕樹, sing dan shu)

I really wanted to create an activity for my daughter to learn shapes and used this chance to create this Christmas tree activity puzzle.  I have tons of cardboard at home from all those Ikea and Amazon purchases and these thick cardboard I found perked my interest in creating a puzzle out of them.  I cut the star, tree that includes 3 triangles and the base which is a rectangle.

What you need:

  1. 2 pieces of cardboard one thick and one thin
  2. Colored cardstock
  3. Scissors
  4. Glue
  5. Sharpie
  6. Exacto knife

Steps:

  1.  Cut out the Christmas tree shape on the green paper, cut out the star on the yellow paper, and the base on the pink paper

She was excited to play with it.  One thing I noticed after I made this is that I should have cut the tree on the thick cardboard a little wider so it will be easier to place the puzzle piece into the cutout area.  Since I didn’t do that, I cut out little tabs on the side so it will be easier to take the pieces out.    She immediately knew how to place the pieces and was so happy when she got it right.  By the end of it she learned the word xing – star in Chinese.  So there was some learning from it.  I had fun making it, it only took about 10 minutes.  Since she’s only 15 months old and it’s really the first time she’s learning the concepts of a Christmas tree, she did really well.

Have Fun!
