My daughter loves her toothbrush. Every morning and night when we brush our teeth she looks in the mirror and sees me and her brushing her teeth. When I take away her toothbrush she’s very upset almost like she’s not done brushing yet. Yet, we all know, she’s only 15 months old and all she’s doing is sucking on the toothbrush and eating the toothpaste. Kids are very smart and they mimic everything you do, so she follows along with what I’m doing although she really has no idea what she’s doing. Same with using a comb, washing her face or putting on cream. Since I’m the only parent that can speak Chinese to her, I talk to her as much as I can in Chinese. I chatter away about toothbrushes and toothpaste and the morning routine every morning. So I decided to make a game with the toothbrush and toothpaste. This is a fun activity learning toothbrush and toothpaste in Chinese.
Fun Activity Learning Toothbrush and Toothpaste in Chinese
In this activity I just focused on her toothbrush and toothpaste. The Chinese words for them are:
- Toothbrush (牙刷, gna chat)
- Toothpaste (牙膏, gna go)
She loves pulling tissues out of the tissue box which I’m sure lots of toddlers love doing, so I used that for this activity. She’s only 15 months old so just using simple things around the house to create an activity. I individually wrapped up her toothbrushes and toothpaste with cue cards and labelled them in Chinese what they were and then wrapped them again in felt fabric. She loves unwrapping gifts so I thought this would be a fun activity, combining unwrapping and pulling things out of a box.

She had fun pulling the objects out of the tissue box. At first I was using large toothbrushes but they were hard to pull out of the box so pulled that out of the mix. We played for about 15 minutes of pulling toothbrushes and toothpaste out of the box and unwrapping and identifying each object. After she pulled them out, I would wrap them back up again in the felt sheet and put them back in the tissue box. She kept on wanting to put her toothbrush in her mouth so we eventually stopped playing. She had fun, and now whenever we see a toothbrush/toothpaste she will try to say the word in Chinese.
